Hi, Doc, are your hands clean?
Hand hygiene is the most powerful way of preventing the spread of bacteria
and viruses in hospital.
And yet, compliance rates among North American healthcare workers can range
from as high as 87% to as low as 30%. So would you feel comfortable asking your
nurse or doctor to wash their hands?
Young: “Not really. Yeah, we hope they've already done that sanitizing job
properly before seeing us”.
Lady: “Yes, it's very important because, you know, you're being touched in places
where you're not usually touched!”
Woman: “It would probably maybe feel that I'm undermining them in a way so
it’s, yeah, I’d think it's a difficult question to approach”.
To make this question easier, Sunnybrook has launched a new campaign called
Clean Hands Matter. Patients are given information at the bedside about what
hand hygiene measures to expect. And if they don't see it or aren't sure,
patients are encouraged to ask, a message reinforced on posters and by buttons
worn by staff.
Dr. Mary Vearncombe says the initiative has been piloted on three units and
been very well received by both patients and staff.
"And indeed on all of the units, the hand
hygiene compliance did go up several
percentage points. Our patients have become and
are becoming much more sophisticated
about their health care”.
As a
physician, Dr. Jeremy Gilbert says he would
never be offended by being asked about hand hygiene.
“I look at it as a relationship I have with patients, that I'm there for
them, and this is one way that I'm there for them and, if I didn't wash my
hands I'm actually doing them a
disservice”.
Man: “I think it's a great idea. It lets you know
that they are taking care of themselves and taking care of you. I wouldn't
hesitate if I ever saw somebody not washing their hands”.
Because of this success, this initiative will soon be incorporated in all
patient units at Sunnybrook, including the Holland Centre and St. John's rehab.
With Sunnyview, I'm Monica Matys.
